Positive Discipline is a philosophy of classroom management based on the work of Alfred Adler and Rudolph Dreikers (author of Children the Challenge), contemporaries of Maria Montessori.  It is designed to empower young people to become responsible, respectful and resourceful members of their classroom communities. Based on the best selling Positive Discipline books by Dr. Jane Nelsen, this workshop will help Montessori staff members incorporate the teaching of important social and life skills into their classrooms in a manner that is deeply respectful and encouraging for both children and adults (including parents, staff, and others).

The tools and concepts of Positive Discipline include:

bullet

Mutual respect. Adults model firmness by respecting themselves and the needs of the situation, and kindness by respecting the needs of the child.

bullet

Identifying the belief behind the behavior. Effective discipline recognizes the reasons kids do what they do and works to change those beliefs, rather than merely attempting to change behavior.

bullet

Effective communication and problem solving skills.

bullet

Discipline that teaches (and is neither permissive nor punitive).

bullet

Focusing on solutions instead of punishment.

bullet

Encouragement (instead of praise). Encouragement notices effort and improvement, not just success, and builds long-term self-esteem and empowerment..

Chip DeLorenzo is the director of the Damariscotta Montessori School, is a veteran Montessori teacher and administrator, and a parent of 3 amazing boys.  He has been working with Positive Discipline since his first years teaching, and has been helping teachers and parents with the PD concepts for over 10 years.  Workshops are also available for individual schools.
